30.07.202609:30:00UTC+00South Africa’s Producer Prices Slip Into Deflation in June, Signalling Easing Cost Pressures

South Africa’s Producer Price Index (PPI) turned negative in June 2026, highlighting a marked easing in upstream inflationary pressures. On a month-over-month basis, PPI fell by 0.1% in June, compared with a 2.6% increase in May 2026, according to data updated on 30 July 2026.

The shift from a strong positive print to a slight decline suggests that producer costs are stabilising after a period of notable month-on-month gains. Since the “actual” measure compares June to May, and the previous figure reflected the change from April to May, the move indicates a clear cooling in price momentum at the producer level.

For markets and policymakers, the negative June reading may be interpreted as a sign that pipeline price pressures are easing, potentially reducing some of the upside risks to future consumer inflation. However, the magnitude and persistence of this move will be closely watched in the coming months to assess whether June marks the start of a broader trend or a one-off correction following May’s sharp rise.
